There is an unprecedented humanitarian need to help care for Ugandan orphans and their caregivers

By nearly all measures, the situation in Uganda today has reached crisis proportions. The AIDS pandemic has swept through the 15-49 year old age group and is destabilizing the extended family.

Facts:

  • 26 million total population
  • 11 million children
  • 2 million orphans (18 years and under)
  • 25% of all Ugandan households contains at least one orphan
  • 90% of Ugandans live below the poverty line
  • Population growth is 2.9% (.9 % growth in the USA )
  • Health officials estimate that 10 % of the 2 million orphaned childrenare HIV positive
  • Less than 25% of those in need receive any service
  • Average woman in Uganda has 7 children
  • Extended families, largely single female widows are raising their orphaned grandchildren
  • The enormity of the problem will exist for at least another 2 decades.
  • Most households are hard pressed to provide financial, social, psychological,
    educational, and health support for the well being of the orphans
